Many wonderful things happen at night, and happily, someone is there to photograph them while we sleep soundly in our beds. At 1:30 a.m., photographer Timothy Joseph Elzinga was awoken by his 2-year-old son Gibson, who noticed stunning colour lights dancing in the sky. Timothy promptly grabbed his camera and captured some incredible images of what he subsequently discovered to be a phenomenon known as “light pillars.”

“Because we reside in Canada, I assumed it was The Northern Lights,” Elzinga explained. “It was a beautiful night, and you could see everything.” These lights were [shooting] hundreds of feet into the sky, shimmering and moving.”
